Recognizing and acknowledging that your child may have a learning disability or a condition such as ADHD that impacts learning can be difficult and stressful. However, learning difficulties are not uncommon. Seeking help early can reduce frustration and ensure you or your child receive appropriate services and guidance. For children and adults, psychoeducational testing is an important first step in understanding the nature of a problem, identifying a child’s strengths and areas of need, and developing treatment recommendations.
As a parent, it can be stressful and worrisome to consider the possibility that your child has a learning issue that may negatively impact his or her development and ability to perform to his or her potential in school. However, learning differences, ADHD, and behavioral challenges are not uncommon and can be treated. With a comprehensive evaluation, we can identify the range of issues that may be affecting your child. Our primary goal is to provide the guidance you need to support your child’s learning and social-emotional needs.
If you notice that your child is struggling with the following issues, psychoeducational evaluations may provide the answers you need.
- Inability to meet reading, writing, and/or math requirements
- Poor grades or lower than expected performance on standardized tests
- Difficulty completing timed tasks/tests
- Easily distracted and/or excessively restless
- Quickly frustrated or fatigues with tasks requiring sustained mental effort
- Problems with organization and procrastination
- Difficulty maintaining relationships with peers
- Trouble with handwriting and fine motor skills
- Difficulty following instructions
- Grades impacted by careless errors on worksheets and tests
- Persistent anxiety, sadness and/or anger
- Acting out/defiance
The Testing Process
In order to identify learning disabilities or behavioral issues, diagnostic testing at Georgetown Psychology Associates will allow us to develop a specialized treatment plan for your child. Evaluations begin with an intake meeting with one of our psychologists to discuss your concerns and what type of testing will be appropriate. Testing typically is conducted over the course of two session, each lasting 3-4 hours. Breaks are given as needed and parents are encouraged to pack lunch or nutritious snacks. During this time, cognitive, educational, neuropsychological and social-emotional tests are administered. When requested, the evaluator will perform a school observation to see the child in a more natural setting, particularly when teachers are reporting significant behavioral concerns. This is done prior to testing so the child does not recognize the tester and feel self-conscious while being observed. The evaluator will also speak with your child’s teacher to discuss their impressions. Should you choose to have your child tested without the school’s knowledge, our evaluators respect that decision.
At the end of the testing process, the evaluator and parent will have a meeting to discuss the test results, provide diagnostic impressions, and provide recommendations to support your child’s learning and overall well-being. We will provide a detailed report that you may choose to share with the school, pediatricians and other treatment providers. Our evaluators are experienced and knowledgeable about the special education process in public schools, as well as the process of requesting accommodations in private schools and on standardized tests.
